In his essay “the language of flowers”, George Bataille writes, “Risen from the stench of the manure pile…the most ideal is rapidly reduced to a wisp of aerial manure.” I see a parallel between the abject life cycle of a flower and the domestic role women play. While female being is perceived as inherently impure and contaminated, ironically, she is one responsible for cleaning in the household. Hello Kitty toilet paper, a material which is both cute and abject, is employed to signify patriarchy’s simultaneous desire and fear towards women, and the melancholy of being constantly under the male gaze.
