Throughout cinema and anime the camera has been used as a critical tool in magnifying female stereotypes. Among the many tropes, I find the femme fatale particularly fascinating, as she wields the power of confronting and disrupting the male gaze. Being an amalgamation of beauty and evil, allure and deception, the femme fatale is much like a chimera, ever shifting and illusive, a threat to patriarchal desires and fantasies. By way of “women’s work”, I illustrate that the woman is capable of inventing and seeing herself, extending the story of the eye to the story of the “I”.
