Angel of No Mercy

Thread, fabric, blades, beads, wool and cardboard
53cm x 53cm
Combining soft materials with blades, “Angel of No Mercy” implies the underlying currents of violence in kawaii culture, whilst also acknowledging the potential of cuteness in creating in-between spaces which offer refuge and agency.
I have recently started exploring the technique of Canadian smocking, which uses hand stitching to create various patterns of folds in the fabric. Enthused by Deleuze’s analysis of Leibniz and the Baroque, I employ the fold in a literal and metaphorical sense in support of the crafty resistance of the female.
